Hire to Complement Weaknesses of the Team – Harry Wang

Published on 2013-10-15

THE CHINESE EDUCATION SYSTEM is excellent at developing technically minded graduates. This has been ideal in the past, since China has developed as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) catering to the production needs of the West. However, as China has emerged as a viable domestic market, and as design, consulting and creative services have moved to mainland China, the gap in ability between technical skills and other softer skills of Chinese technicians has become more apparent.
Harry Wang is the Senior Human Resource Manager for d.light design, a for-profit social enterprise whose purpose is to improve the lives of at least 100 million people by 2020 via the manufacture and distribution of solar light and power products to over 40 countries in the developing world. His challenges in finding technical staff with a complete set of soft and hard skills has led him to believe that a perfect individual is impossible to find, but a perfect team can be created through complementing strengths and weaknesses.
